Longyou, one of the six districts and counties in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, invested more than 34 million yuan ($5 million) in transforming 613 rural public restrooms this year, making them a welcome new sight in Longyou's rural areas.
Before the transformation, it was difficult to find a public restroom in the county's villages and even if one was lucky enough to find one, the rooms were often inadequate for public use.
While each of the new public restrooms occupies an area of 120 square meters and provides a pleasant environment, they are dotted among old streets, parking lots, vegetable markets and busy shopping areas in Longyou's villages.
The transformed restrooms contribute greatly to improving the life quality of rural residents, said Hu Xiaotu, deputy director of Longyou housing construction bureau.
"Longyou plans to employ workers to be in charge of the daily management of the rural restrooms, and to maintain them neat and clean," added Hu.
