Mount Wutai, Xinzhou
(忻州市五台山风景名胜区 xīn zhōu wǔ tái shān fēng jǐng míng shèng qū)
Mount Wutai, located in the northeastern part of Shanxi province, is 230 kilometers away from the provincial capital city Taiyuan. Together with Mount Emei in Sichuan province, Mount Jiuhua of Anhui province, and Mount Putuo in Zhejiang province, they form the four famous Buddhist mountains of China.
Mount Wutai has an abundant number of wonderful peaks and cliffs, with some of them famous for something. The Writing Cliff reveals seal characters and official scripts when water is poured on the cliff and wiped away with a handkerchief.
Because of the mountain's elevation, it's cold most days of the year, and in midsummer days it remains a cool escape from summer heat, so Mount Wutai is also known as the Cool Mountain. It is a tourist destination integrating natural scenery, ancient architecture, historical heritage, Buddhist culture, folk customs, and a summer resort. In 1982, Mount Wutai was entered by the State Council into the first list of national level scenic areas. Over the years, it has been known as a national scenic area, one of China’s top 10 famous mountains, national geological park, and an important part of national and world heritage.
