Founded in July 1957, the Zhengzhou Museum specializes in local art and history. Its original 4,330 square meter site was a shrine commemorating the martyrs killed in the military campaign known as the Northern Expedition in the Bishagang Park in August 1928. In 1997, the local government decided to build a new hall which opened to the public in December 1999.

The permanent exhibitions feature stone Buddhist statutes and steles, as well as a collective display of archaeological finds along the central route of China's "South-North Water Diversion" project for relieving the freshwater shortage in northern China. These cultural relics were unearthed at eight prefecture-level cities in Henan province where new canals were to be constructed and existing reservoirs expanded, including the capital city Zhengzhou. The museum's collections range from bronze items and ceramics to stone carvings and traditional Chinese calligraphy and paintings.
