A provincial-level historical museum, the Jiangxi Provincial Museum was initiated in 1953 and officially opened to the public on July 1, 1961. In 1971 it became a specialized museum engaged in archeological excavation and collection and study of historic relics. In August 1980, the Jiangxi Provincial History Museum and the Jiangxi Provincial Revolutionary Museum merged into the Jiangxi Provincial Museum.

The Museum houses a collection of 58,916 items of traditional Chinese art, primarily bronze ware and ceramics. Notable collections are Shang Dynasty (c. 16th century - 11th century BC) bronze ware unearthed from Dayangzhou of Xingan county, Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC) lacquer ware and stoneware excavated from the cliff tombs in Guixi county, relics of the regional princes of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), ceramics from throughout the dynasties, paintings and calligraphy by Jiangxi natives, and items of revolutions that occurred in Jiangxi in modern times.

The museum’s permanent exhibitions, focusing on history, art, and natural history, are The Discoveries from the Tomb of the Han Dynasty Marquis of Haihun, Relics of Jiangxi Ancient Civilization, Jiangxi Modern Revolutionary Relics, Jiangxi Ancient Ceramics, Acclaimed Ceramic Kilns and Kiln Ware of Jiangxi, Mineral Resources of Jiangxi, Customs of the Ke People in Jiangxi, and the Origins of Life.
