Taohuayuan (Peach Flower Garden), Youyang
(桃花源风景区 tāo huā yuán fēnɡ jǐnɡ qū)
Located in the mountainous suburb of Youyang Tujia and Miao autonomous county, Chongqing, Taohuayuan, which means peach flower garden in Chinese, is a national 5A-level scenic area. It is the prototype of the "heaven on earth" mentioned by the great poet Tao Yuanming who lived during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420).
The scenic area is 300 kilometers from downtown Chongqing and spans over an area of 50 square kilometers. It consists of eight famous attractions, covering Hidden Peach Garden, Fuxi Grotto, Youzhou Ancient Town, Peach Garden Forest Park, Taohuayuan Plaza, Peach Garden Town, Eryou Mountain Themed Park and Peach Garden Theater.
As a combination of geological wonders, while boasting farming culture from ancient dynasties, the folk culture of Tujia and Miao ethnic groups, and pastoral scenery of Wuling Mountains, the area is a perfect gateway for urban residents to escape from the noise of the city and return to the arms of mother nature.
Youzhou Ancient Town, for example, has a street that extends 1,300 meters and houses buildings of the Tujia and the Miao groups. It serves as a living museum of the architecture, history, culture, and customs of local people.
