Ancient City of Ping Yao, Jinzhong
(晋中市平遥古城景区 jìn zhōng píng yáo gǔ chéng jǐng qū)
Located in Pingyao county, Jinzhong city, Shanxi province and built more than 2,700 years ago, the Ancient City of Ping Yao is the best preserved ancient Han Chinese city. Being an example of ancient Chinese cities, it was laid out in accordance with Bagua (the Eight Trigrams which formed the basis of traditional Chinese philosophies, such as Taoism), which vividly showcases the urban planning concepts in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
The ancient city gives insight into the ancient prosperous merchant pioneers who established the first banks in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Pingyao city walls, built in 1370 during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, are some of the most well-preserved large scale ancient walls in the country, as well as a core part of the ancient city.
The city was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO on Dec 3, 1997.
