Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone (南京经济技术开发区) was set up in September 1992 and became a national economic and technological development zone in 2002. Located in the northeast of Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, the zone is divided into four areas: Xingang, Qixia, Longtan and a liquid crystal valley.

By the end of 2017, the zone covered 200 square kilometers, featuring four function areas: industry, bonded warehouses, financial trade and comprehensive service.

Three competitive industries – optical display, high-end equipment and biopharmacy – contribute significantly to the development of the area, with an output value of nearly 300 billion yuan ($43.2 billion). Its optical display output value accounts for 70 percent of the Nanjing market.

In the first nine months of 2018, the Nanjing zone achieved a regional GDP of 53.7 billion yuan, including an industrial added value of 42.9 billion yuan.

The actual foreign capital of the first nine months of 2018 was $500 million and the total import and export volume of service trade was $498 million.

The overall strength of the development zone ranked in the top 10 among the 219 State-level development zones announced by the Ministry of Commerce in 2017. The ranking was due to its five advantages and achievements.

First, the development zone has an advantageous geographical position being less than 10 kilometers from the city center, as well as convenient transport. People can reach Nanjing Lukou International Airport in about half an hour and the zone is next to Longtan port. There are also freight railways, expressways and subways in the zone.

Second, the zone has achieved great economic results over its 26-year development. It has attracted more than 3,000 enterprises so far, including over 300 foreign-funded companies, eight enterprises with an annual industrial output value of above 10 billion yuan, 74 enterprises with investments from Fortune Global 500 firms, and 197 enterprises with annual output value above 20 million yuan. The output value per unit of land in the development zone ranks in the forefront of national development zones.

Third, the leading industries in the zone, including photoelectric display, high-end equipment manufacturing, and biological medicine, have formed industrial clusters. Photoelectric display industrial scale has reached 200 billion yuan, gathering more than 70 well-known domestic and overseas companies, including Nanjing Panda Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Nanjing Display Co Ltd.

The output value of the high-end equipment manufacturing industry totaled 80 billion yuan, with more than 50 famous companies gathering in the zone, such as BOSCH and Baiyun Power Group. The output value of the biological medicine industry reached 10 billion yuan, accounting for a third of Nanjing’s total.

The zone is also developing anew energy vehicle and artificial intelligence industries.

Fourth, the zone has abundant sources of technical innovation. The Xianlin University Town, located in the zone, houses 18 universities, including Nanjing University, Nanjing Normal University, and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

Fifth, the zone has an excellent ecological environment. As a national eco-industrial demonstration zone, it has 38 State-level or provincial-level cultural relic preservation sites, such as Qixia Temple. It also has an international school, a hospital, a five-star restaurant and shopping malls, as well as villas and apartments.
