Zhoushan university volunteer projects win national awards

Two youth volunteer service projects from Zhejiang Ocean University in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, won gold and silver awards respectively at the recently held 4th Chinese Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition. 

The gold award winner is a project dedicated to the moral, quality, and marine science education of special juvenile groups on the islands of Zhoushan, including children of new residents, handicapped children and left-behind children. 

It has provided services for four of the city's schools for children of new residents, one school for deaf-mutes and over 20 communities over the 13 years since it was established, benefiting more than 30,000 students. 

The silver award winner is a project focusing on improving the island's environment and economy, and promoting the local marine culture. 

Initiated in 2013, the project has helped to renovate six islands of the city, including the Xuanshan Island, which has turned into a popular tourist destination receiving 5,000 visitors per year, greatly increasing the income of local residents. 

Zhejiang Ocean University has been devoted to strengthening students' moral education through volunteer services in recent years, to encourage students to firmly uphold core social values and do more good in the society.  

The Chinese Youth Volunteer Service Project Competition is the nation's most authoritative and influential competition in the volunteer service field. This year's event saw the participation of 590 volunteer service groups from around the country, who competed for three days in total.
