China United Network Communications Group Co (China Unicom) was set up on Jan 6, 2009 through a restructuring of the former China Netcom and China Unicom. With branches in 31 Chinese provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and a variety of other countries and regions, China Unicom is the only Chinese telecom operator simultaneously listed in New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai. It has been among the Fortune Global 500 companies for several years in a row, and was ranked 241st on the list in 2017.
China Unicom offers fixed-line and mobile services, domestic and international fixed telephony networks and facilities, satellite-enabled international leased line service, data communication service, network access and value-added services, as well as system integration related to communication and information services.
In January 2009, China Unicom was awarded the WCDMA license for 3G telecom service. It received the TD-LTE license from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Dec 4, 2013 and the LTE FDD license on Feb 27, 2015, entering a new stage of development in the 4G era as a "dual 4G" carrier.
