Dalian Modern Museum is located on the shores of Xinhai Bay in Dalian, Liaoning province, and is the ideal destination for tourists wishing to learn about the city’s modern history. The museum opened to the public on March 2, 2002 and occupies a land area of 21,600 square meters, with a floor space of 30,400 sq m. It has five storeys, including a basement floor.
The museum’s main exhibition hall covers 3,000 sq m. With 1,300 cultural relics and 800 pictures on display, it showcases the city’s development from a little village into the most important international port city in Northeast China between 1840 and 1949.
The exhibition hall explores seven themes: Dalian’s development and construction of coastal defenses; Dalian’s role in the Sino-Japanese War from 1894 to 1895; the colonization by Russia and its evolution into a port city; the Russo-Japanese War and Japanese colonial rule; multicultural dialogue and integration; the city’s modern history; and the liberation of Dalian and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.
There are also two thematic exhibition halls and two special exhibition halls, mainly exhibiting cultural relics from China and abroad. In recent years, Dalian Modern Museum has built links with over 60 museums from 27 provinces to stage various exhibitions. Many art exhibitions from Russia, Japan, Germany, France and the United States have also been held at the museum.
The museum receives 800,000 visitors each year. Various services are on offer for visitors, including guides, audio commentary, bag storage and free wheelchair rental.
