The Changzhou museum is a comprehensive provincial establishment founded in 1958 with a focus on human history, natural history, and art.It houses a total of over 30,000 cultural relics and specimens, with jade ware dating back to the Liangzhu Culture of the Neolithic era, stoneware dated from the 8th to 3rd century BC, lacquer ware and ceramics from the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368), and paintings and calligraphic works from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1944) as the main part of the museum collection. The museum is also celebrated for its natural history museum for children, the only one in Jiangsu province. The children's museum contains over 8,000 specimens and fossils in its permanent collection, which is divided into six major categories, including furry animals, maritime creatures, insects, local herbal medicine, mineral specimens, and bone fossils. The Confuciusornis bird fossil, as well as specimens of the slit snail and Kaiser-i-Hind butterfly, are particularly precious and rare collections.

Permanent exhibitions focus on local history and culture, the works of native artist and connoisseur Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997), and mahogany furniture donated by Liu Guojun, in addition to the natural history exhibition for children.

The museum building, completed in 2007 and occupying a total area of 28,000 square meters, features an eye-catching exterior and is considered a local cultural landmark.
