The China Science and Technology Museum is the only comprehensive museum of science and technology at the national level in China. It is a science popularization base which aims to expand knowledge of innovative and advanced technology.
The museum was opened to the public in 1988. In 2009 a modern building rose at the new site of the museum in the Beijing Olympic Garden area. The colossal square building, resembling the style of the lock designed by the founder of Chinese architecture, Lu Ban (507-444 BC), occupies an area of 48,000 square meters and has a floor space of 102,000 sq m, making it an important part of the Olympic Green.
The China Science and Technology Museum has five major thematic exhibitions, namely Science Paradise, The Glory of China, Science & Technology and Life, Explorations and Discoveries, and Challenges and the Future. It features a public display area and four special-effect theaters -- the Dome Theatre, Giant Screen Theatre, 4D Theatre and Motion Theatre. A science popularization lecture hall, a multifunctional hall, and a number of laboratories and classrooms are also on site.
