The Vinh Tan 1 Thermal Power Plant, constructed by China Southern Power Grid Co (CSG), successfully finished the performance test and initial reliable capacity (IDC) test on its two units. Passing the tests marks the completion of construction, installation and commissioning of the two units.
The plant was put into full commercial operation at 00:00 k on Nov 27, 2018.

The plant is a key project of Sino-Vietnamese economic and trade cooperation, and a project for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and promotion of electric power cooperation in the Greater Mekong Sub-region.
Since the project started on June 16, 2015, the builders have overcome many difficulties under a severe climate and totally different customs. They successfully completed the power supply system, steam blow pipe, launching of a complete set of generators, grid-connection of generators and the simultaneous completion of a 168-hour reliability test run on its two units by applying power equipment technology with Chinese standards.

The actual duration of the project was half a year shorter than the requirement in the build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract, creating a new record for construction speed of the same type of units in Vietnam.
It is said that after the BOT plant is operational about 8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity will be generated each year to alleviate the power shortage in southern Vietnam and promote Vietnam's economic development.
In the next step, Vietnam Vinh Tan Co will strengthen production and operation management to ensure stable operation of the units.
