The newly extended runway of Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport welcomed its first trial run on Oct 30.

Construction on the extension to the runway, finished in August, increased its length from 2,400 meters to 3,200 meters to meet higher passenger demand.

The Airbus A330-200 aircraft used in this trial flight was 60 meters in length and 18 meters in height with its weight reaching about 230 tons. It is the biggest aircraft that has ever taken off and landed at Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport.

Thanks to the extension construction, the airport will soon be a Grade-4E airport, the second-highest ranking in China's five-tier airport system.

"The success of this trial run has elevated the development of the airport to a new stage and it will better serve Yangzhou and Taizhou," said Wang Dongsheng, chairman of the airport.

Wang said the airport was expected to transport over 2.4 million passengers this year and its airlines will fly to Singapore, Malaysia and Russia in the future.
