Huguangyan World Geological Park in Zhanjiang is situated on maar volcanic landforms. The scenic spot consists mainly of the world's largest Maar volcanic lake and the basalt rocks around the lake. The Research Institute of China Scientific Institute determined that Huguangyan was formed about 140,000 to 160,000 years ago, after the volcanic eruption. Many samples indicate that the lake became a rare Maar Lake after the volcanic eruption in the plain area.
