Sewer inspection robots were used for the first time in Pingtan during a sewer check on Oct 22.
The robots are among the new pieces of equipment introduced into Pingtan this year by authorities to renovate the local environment.
The sewer inspection robots are of a similar size to toy cars and are equipped with various pieces of intelligent equipment including cameras, searching lights and sensors.
Systems to control movement, and for data analysis and recording have also been installed in the robots.
"They can go deep inside the pipeline where humans cannot reach to check whether they are damaged," said Wang Wenyan, a staff member from Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone Water Investment Co Ltd.
The image the robots capture can be transferred immediately back to a computer so workers can try and analyze and rectify the problem.
"It's like doctors doing proctoscopy. Robots are the extension of our eyes in the pipelines to find out the problem," said Wang.
