Construction started on the Lianzhen railway line, connecting four main cities in Jiangsu, namely Lianyungang, Huaian, Yangzhou and Zhenjiang, on Oct 19.
The Lianzhen railway line, which will cut through the middle and north of Jiangsu, is to put an end to the situation of having no railways in the north of the province.
The railway is expected to be ready for operation in August 2020. A total of 16 stations will be set up along the 305.2-kilometer railway line with its overall investment reaching 46.47 billion yuan ($6.7 billion). The design driving speed is 250 kilometers per hour.
Thanks to the new route, Lianyungang, Huaian, Yangzhou and Zhenjiang will be connected to the national high-speed rail network. The rail line will slash the travel time between Lianyungang and Shanghai to three and a half hours from the previous 13 hours.
The new railway will also bring new development opportunities to northern Jiangsu and benefit cities along the route as well.
