The Pingtan narcissus, named after the island city in Fujian province, was selected as the emblem flower of Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone on Oct 12.
As one of the flower species that blossom in winter, Pingtan narcissus is known for its fragrance and strength and is under the protection of geographical indications.
Feng Liqiang, chairman of Pingtan Narcissus Association, said Pingtan narcissus used to grow in the wild until 1978, when artificial domestication started.
After more than 30 years' development, Pingtan has made great achievements in cultivating the plant without any technical support.
Feng added that the unique geographic location, with its low altitude and strong ultraviolet radiation, contributed a lot to Pingtan narcissus's growth.
"Now the planting area for Pingtan narcissus has reached over 66 hectares, along with some wild narcissus," said Feng Liqiang.
Feng said that more efforts will be put into the further development of narcissus culture to boost Pigntan tourism in winter, such as building exhibition halls and themed amusement parks.
