Built in 1925 in Siming district, southwest of Xiamen, the 1,198-meter-long Zhongshan Road has always been the city’s business hub since its opening to trade and commerce. Over 300 shops and stores cluster together in this street, including the world-renowned Printemps Department Store from France and the traditional Chinese brand Guanghua Pharmacy, along with bookstores, teahouses, cinemas, hotels, restaurants and local-specialty stores. Some of them even have their names handwritten by celebrities and calligraphers, such as “Xinhua Bookstore” by Chairman Mao and “Tianxian Hotel” by the famous calligrapher Luodan from Fujian, rendering an atmosphere of arts alongside the commerce.
Crowned as one of China’s most famous historical and cultural streets, Zhongshan Road keeps its old blocks relatively complete, with abundant historical and cultural relics under government protection that well represent its history in modern times. It is also the only one commercial street in China that leads directly to the sea, facing the beautiful island of Gulangyu in the distance. The distinctive traditional arcaded buildings, splendid LED night views and a variety of local delicacies on the street are also what make Zhongshan Road stand out.
