Located in the western part of Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Baotou is the largest city in the autonomous region and serves as an important transport hub. The city is known for its rare earth industry and its beautiful grassland surroundings.
Baotou has witnessed drastic changes and development in every aspect since China’s reform and opening-up, including to its environment and culture.
3. Environment
In recent years, Baotou has fully implemented several key ecological projects. The forest coverage rate has increased from 15.1 percent to 17.2 percent. Grassland vegetation coverage has increased from 29 percent to 32 percent. And it has been recognized as one of the national pilot areas for sustainable development.
A total of 7.8 billion yuan ($1.13 billion) has been spent on implementing 242 air pollution control projects.
In 2015, the number of days with good air quality in the city reached 250, 57 days more than in 2014.
