Approved by the State Council in 1992, Baotou city established Baotou Rare Earth High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. This was the first national high-tech development zone to be established in Inner Mongolia.

With the development of the city’s economy, its culture, economy, and science and technology sector has been strengthened.

On July 9, 2008, the Olympic flame passed through the city’s Gangtie Street, and the Olympic torch relay gave new vitality to this modern industrial city.

Baotou has won numerous national and autonomous region-level honors including for being a National Civilized City.
