The Pingtan campus of Fujian Polytechnic of Information Technology, the first higher education institution in Pingtan, opened on Oct 9 after over one year's construction, welcoming around 1,200 students.
The campus covers an area of 800 mu (53.3 hectares), with its overall investment reaching 1.6 billion yuan ($231 million).
The campus is expected to enroll a total of 10,000 full time students and offer vocational training and adult education for 14,000 students.
Due to Pingtan's unique geographic location of being the closest place on the Chinese mainland to Taiwan, Cross-Straits Tourism College has been set up in the Pingtan campus.
Being designed as a communication base for students majoring in tourism from both sides of the Straits, the college focuses on strengthening cooperation with higher education institutions in Taiwan and has open distinctive lessons featuring Pingtan elements such as local culture and food for students.
"We will also work with companies in Pingtan when carrying out education to improve teaching quality and contribute to the further development of the local tourism industry," said Wei Zhengzhu, executive vice dean of the college.
