The Sept 23 departure of G5711, the first train to leave Shenzhen North for West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong, marked a new stage of Hong Kong railway development.
The train not only connects Hong Kong with the 25,000-kilometer national high-speed rail system, but also promotes Hong Kong's socio-economic development and people's livelihood, said Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Designed by China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, or XRL, has a total length of 140 kilometers, of which the Guangzhou South Station - Shenzhen Futian Station has a length of about 114 kilometers. The 26-kilometer long Hong Kong section of the rail has tunnels with a speed limit of 200 km/h; it takes only 14 minutes to travel from Hong Kong to Futian district in Shenzhen.
The group, relying on its deep technical accumulation and management capabilities, adapted well to Hong Kong's tough technical standards and applied its technology and service to complete construction of the rail's Hong Kong section to high standards.
It first introduced the advanced high-speed rail measurement technology standards and the two-block ballast-less track into Hong Kong and provided rail structure optimization consulting services regarding engineering procurement to Hong Kong's track building contractor, saving more than 10 million yuan ($1.45 million) in construction costs.
In 2008, the group started the survey and design work of the train building project including the incorporating testing of its coordination system, the tunnel design for the Shenzhen-Hong Kong section, the research on design, operation and maintenance plan of electromechanical system and the track system design and engineering precision measurements in the Hong Kong section, ensuring the project approval and smooth construction of the section. The group has also researched such matters as vehicle dynamics and the communication signal system.
With the opening of Hong Kong section of the train, it will be more convenient for people in Hong Kong to go to and live in Shenzhen.
