With an investment of 1.5 billion yuan ($218 million) yuan, construction of the Xinhai Ro-Ro Terminal Comprehensive Passenger Transportation Hub commenced at Xinhai Port, Haikou on Sept 29.
The complex will have three aboveground stories, with total floor area of 83,000 square meters. The first floor will be a stilt space, reserved for bus lanes and vehicle security inspection.
The second floor – the departure floor – is designed for security checks when passengers leave Hainan. It will also have waiting lounges and business and office areas. The third floor – the arrival floor – will also have security checks and commercial and office areas.
The complex forms part of the 3.3-billion-yuan Xinhai Port Comprehensive Passenger Transportation Hub project, a marine portal of Hainan island and a bridgehead of the Qiongzhou Strait Economic Zone, which integrates functions such as separation of passengers and vehicles, checkpoint supervision and transport transfer.
The other part of the project is the 1.77-billion-yuan GTC (ground transportation center) and its supportive facilities, which has completed conceptual design and is expected to be put into use concurrently with the ro-ro terminal transportation hub.
Construction of the first and second phases of the ro-ro terminal has been completed. With 18 GT berths, Xinhai Port is capable of receiving 2.7 million vehicles and 18 million passengers annually.
