Inner Mongolia issues first mainland residence permit for Taiwan residents

A Taiwan resident surnamed Chen received his mainland residence permit in Hohhot, capital city of Inner Mongolia autonomous region on Sept 7, becoming the first recipient of the permit in the region, local media reported.

Mr Chen applied for the mainland residence permit on Sept 3 after the Regulations for Application of Residence Permit for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Residents took effect on Sept 1.

According to the regulations, applicants who have stable jobs and have lived in the Chinese mainland for more than six months can bring their mainland travel permits and related materials to local authorities, and should receive a mainland residence card in about 20 working days.

Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents that successfully apply for this residence card can enjoy the same public services as mainland residents, including social insurance, employment and medical treatment.

The residence card is valid for five years.

Some 108 police stations in Inner Mongolia are equipped to deal with the applications, according to the regional government.

As of Sept 7, there were five Taiwan residents to be given the residence card in Inner Mongolia.
