A Chinese consortium consisting of two power generation equipment makers -- Dongfang Electric Corp and Shanghai Electric Group – have won the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for a coal-fired power plant in Egypt.

The signing ceremony was held during the China-Egypt Business Forum and was witnessed by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who was invited to attend the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

Zou Lei, Chairman of Dongfang Electric Corp, and Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi, signed the contract.

The Chinese consortium has pledged to install their self-developed ultra-supercritical, near-zero polluting power generating technology on six coal-fired units with a total generating capacity of 6.6 gW for the Hamrawein power plant.

Upon its completion, it will be the largest clean coal-fired power station in the world.

The contract is a landmark for China's high-end power generation equipment manufacturers as they are bringing the self-developed, most advanced ultra-supercritical clean coal power generating technology to the world for the first time.

"Egypt is among the first countries to support the Belt and Road Initiative," said Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, adding that he believes the BRI will bring huge opportunities for bilateral ties and regional cooperation.

He noted that Egypt will continue to support and take part in the construction of the Belt and Road and promote cooperation between Africa and China.

The president also spoke highly of Chinese enterprises' contribution to Egypt's economy and expressed his belief that Dongfang Electric will efficiently build a high-quality plant.
