Hunan Yuanchuang Super Rice Technology Co.'s professional workstation was unveiled by Yuan Longping in the Liuyang Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone on Sept 3.
Yuan Longping, a famous Chinese agronomist and educator, is known for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s. Hybrid rice has since been grown in dozens of countries in Africa, the Americas, and Asia—providing a robust food source in areas with a high risk of famine. For his contributions, Yuan is sometimes called the "Father of Hybrid Rice" by the Chinese media.
Yuanchuang Company's Hunan provincial professional academic workstation consists of 22 experts, including academics from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Yuan Longping's team. The workstation will provide strong intellectual support for the company as it builds a modern commercial breeding system for super rice.
Yuanchuang Company was established in 2012 by Dr. Deng Qiyun, a core expert of Yuan Longping’s hybrid rice innovation team, and is committed to the technical research, promotion, and service of super rice. As of today, "Y 900 rice" extends across a total of 10 million mu (666,666 hectares), with an increased grain yield of 1 billion kilograms and an increase of 2.5 billion yuan in income for farmers, leading to the large-scale industrial promotion of super hybrid rice in China.
Dr. Deng Qiyun said that the company will make full use of the talent and technical advantages provided by the workstation to further improve the supply chain of the super rice industry, particularly in terms of scientific research, production, and management. Yuan Longping also expressed his determination to achieve a super rice yield of 18 tons per hectare and continue to contribute to hybrid rice research in China.
The Liuyang Hi-Tech Development Zone has already built six professional academic workstations, two provincial-level public innovation spaces, and one provincial-level incubator with 119 enterprises. It has established close cooperation with more than 40 colleges, universities, and research institutes.
