The added value of Zhanjiang's modern service industry increased by 10.9 percent to 35.6 billion yuan ($5.2 billion) in the first half of this year, accounting for 26.2 percent of local GDP, announced the city's Bureau of Commerce on Aug 21.
As an emerging sector, the modern service industry features a new business model, service pattern and management system based on modern technology. With less consumption of natural resources and pollutant emissions, it generates greener GDP compared with traditional industries.
Zhanjiang's modern logistics sector is a shining example of the phenomenal development of the local modern service industry. In the first half of this year, Zhanjiang Port processed 164.54 million tons of cargo, an increase of 7 percent from last year.
Meanwhile, the regional distribution system has grown increasingly mature. More and more intelligent delivery lockers and express delivery public service platforms have been set up in communities, campuses and commercial areas.
Other fields within the modern service industry, including information, finance, science and technology, conventions and exhibitions, and education also saw varying level of development amid reform and innovation.
Next, the city plans to further advance innovation-driven development and reform and opening up, while also fostering a series of new business models and intelligent management platforms, according to an executive from the bureau.
