Fishery industry

Qidong, a county-level city in Jiangsu province, located on the north side of the Yangtze River estuary, has been on the list of the national top 100 counties or cities in the fishery industry since 1991.

In the past 30 years, Qidong's fishery production has developed from simple marine fishing to marine framing and the deep processing of aquatic products. As a result, the overall benefits of the fishery industry have been increasing year by year.

The city's total output value of the marine economy reached 49.8 billion yuan ($7.22 billion) in 2017, a year-on-year increase of 11.16 percent. The output value of the fishery industry totaled 6.58 billion yuan, up 0.02 percent year-on-year, and export volume reached $78 million, an increase of 11.6 percent compared to the year before last.

As early as 2000, Qidong had taken measures, such as a moratorium on summer fishing, seedling releases and the construction of artificial reefs to promote sustainable and healthy development of its marine resources and fishery industry.  

In recent years, Qidong has applied modern industrial technologies, such as engineering technologies, mechanical equipment and monitoring instruments, to fishery production to realize industrial marine farming and to ensure a more sustainable and healthier development of the fishery industry.

Qidong has three provincial-level fishery research institutes, including the Seedling Center of Marine Resources Development Institute of Jiangsu, the Qingdong Base of Shanghai Fisheries Research Institute, and Qidong Jinhai'an Fisheries Research Institute.
