Jiangsu province is famous for its cultural riches, with countless ancient and modern people of renown and admired cultural resources. The province has been promoting the reform and development of its cultural industry in recent years and made great achievements in 2017.
Jiangsu had more than 100,000 cultural enterprises by the end of 2017, 6,000 of which were enterprises with an annual turnover above 5 million yuan ($724,290). The comprehensive index of cultural development ranks second in China.
The total operating revenue in Jiangsu of the press and publishing, radio, television and film industry in 2017 reached 220 billion yuan. Jiangsu National Digital Publishing Base achieved annual sales revenue of more than 20 billion yuan, with the proportion of digital reading continuing to grow.
The annual box office receipts of the film industry in Jiangsu reached 5.204 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 24.31 percent. A total of 286,600 copyright registrations were completed, an increase of 58 percent year-on-year, ranking second of all provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities.
Jiangsu is also devoted to promoting excellent traditional culture, and the protection and continuation of cultural heritage.
It conducted its first provincial archaeological survey in 2017, identifying 613 relic collection units and registering more than 2.81 million items of cultural relics. It approved the establishment of a batch of provincial-level historical and cultural towns and villages. It organized training programs on intangible cultural heritages, training more than 700 people.
By the end of 2017, Jiangsu has established 226 key cultural relic sites under State-level protection, 12 State-listed historical and cultural cities, and 282 museums and memorial halls.
Besides, Jiangsu has continued to promote the popularization of cultural activities and the establishment of rural libraries, and has increased the amount of films showing in rural areas, with 200,000 public welfare films showing in the countryside in 2017. It also completed the establishment of 192 digital TV channels.
