Construction of the largest hydropower station in Belarus by two Chinese companies, part of an effort to promote energy cooperation between the two countries, was completed on July 31.
The Vitebsk hydropower station was built by Beijing Engineering Corp Ltd and Sinohydro Bureau 9 Co Ltd, subsidiaries of Power Construction Corporation of China (also known as PowerChina), a leading engineering contractor.

Average annual power production of the station is 138 gigawatt-hours. Its total installed power capacity is 40 megawatts. The project is the long-cherished aspiration of the over 9 million Belarus people.
It's a pilot program in Sino-Belarus economic and technical cooperation and a good implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative.

After three years of construction, the first unit of the station began to generate electricity in December 2016.
The station is also used for shipping.
