The State Council, China's Cabinet, is strengthening the special campaign against telecommunication fraud, which has achieved remarkable results since it was launched in 2015.
In all, since the campaign began, 18 regions have been identified as key areas for combating telecom fraud. In the first stage 12 regions were listed, but five of them, including Fengning county in Hebei province and Yugan county in Jiangxi province, have been removed from the list after two years' efforts. However, by the end of last year, six new regions had been added to the list as key regions for fighting telecom fraud.
The dynamic list of telecom fraud is an effective way to deal with the problem of telecom fraud, as it motivates the local governments of the regions on the list to strengthen their anti-fraud efforts so their regions can be delisted and get rid of the stigma.
The special campaign to crack down on telecom fraud has achieved remarkable success recently. The statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology says that the amount of hotline reports about telecom frauds shows a declining tendency, and the number of telecom fraud cases reported in Beijing in 2017 was the lowest it has been in the past five years.
