Nanjing Technical College of Special Education was established in Nanjing in 1982. The original name was Nanjing Normal School of Special Education, which was founded by the Ministry of Education as the cooperation projects between the Chinese government and the United Nations Children's Fund. It is the first normal school of special education in the modern history of China, which set a precedent for special education and filled the gap in educational disciplines.
Nanjing Technical College of Special Education is the only independent institute of higher education that mainly trains teachers for special education. It also ranks No.1 in the overall strength of Chinese special education field.
The college has 9 schools (departments) and 22 majors, forming three distinctive group specialties in the special education teachers’ training, the talents’ training for the disabled management and service, and the disabled higher vocational education. The college involves six disciplines - Education, Literature, Management, Law, Technology and Agriculture, with the most majors running in national special education.
The college currently has Yanziji campus and Jiangning campus, occupying a total area of 502.8 acres. It has 5,370 full-time students (including 485 disabled college students), 369 faculty members (including 302 full-time teachers), and a number of well-known experts in special education.
There are 49 campus laboratories (training rooms) and 118 national practice (training) bases, with the auditory laboratory in the leading position of domestic industry. College library has collections of 541,500 books and the largest number of Braille books. Meanwhile, the college has 1 affiliated kindergarten and 2 affiliated primary schools.
Since the foundation, the college has been carrying out the aim of serving for the special education and the undertakings of the disabled. Adhering to the running philosophy of “shaping soul with fraternity, taking quality first, enhancing characteristic running” and the school motto of “fraternity, self-improvement, truth seeking and innovation”, it has created a new route for special education teachers’ training with Chinese characteristics.
It has also formed three distinctive personnel training modes with different purposes - for the teachers of special education with the character of “shaping soul with fraternity, taking capability as foundation, combining education with rehabilitation, cooperating with other schools, integrating teaching, learning and research”; for the applied talents who will work for the disabled course with the qualifications of “technician and teacher”; for the disabled higher vocational students with the future of “combination of work and study, combination of industry and teaching, combination of handicapped and health”.
Cultivated more than 20,000 specialists who have been working in the national-wide posts of the special education school, the management and service organizations for the disabled, the college has been praised as “the cradle of special education teachers in China”.
