Nantong is a national new industrial industry demonstration base, a national ship export base and a national hi-tech ship base. In 2017, the total value of its ship and marine engineering reached 205.60 billion yuan ($30.39 billion). Nantong has become a gathering place for a group of internationally-recognized enterprises, including Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co, Ltd (NACKS), COSCO (Nantong) Shipyard Co Ltd, China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co Ltd, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd, Keppel Nantong Heavy Industries Co Ltd, Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry Co Ltd and Wison (Nantong) Heavy Industry Co Ltd. Tiankun, a cutter-suction dredger, and Zhenhualongyuan-3, a super freighter with 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit containers, were both made in Nantong.

COSCO (Nantong) Shipyard Co Ltd has won scientific and technological achievement awards, such as the first prize of the State Science and Technology Advancement Awards and the Golden Prize for Chinese Patent Technology, and has developed a product shipping system that includes an ultra-large container ship, an super-sized ore carrier, and a massive tanker, as well as a designated vehicle carrier, a chemical tanker, a special engineering craft and an offshore support vessel.

Nantong's marine engineering equipment products include various drilling and accommodation platforms, floating production storage and offloading platforms and floating regasification units for offshore and deep sea areas. There is also a series of products related to both ship and marine engineering such as electrical and other instruments, accommodation equipment, deck machinery, drilling modules, lifting and locking devices, and dynamic positioning and mooring systems.
