With the number of fire accidents caused by charging electric bikes in old residential communities rising, Yangzhou fire control department has made a series of changes to transform the situation.
Xincheng Garden Community in southern Yangzhou was chosen as the pilot area.
A fire safety-themed square and a mini-fire station were set up in the community with slogans posted in prominent positions.
Officials also set up a large parking area for electric bikes with a rainproof canopy equipped with public charging piles.
Wu Feifei from Yangzhou fire control department said the public charging piles applied the method of paying by scanning a code with residents' smartphones and cost only a few cents an hour to operate. Also, the charging time can be preset to prevent accidents caused by overcharging.
Moreover, an automatic spray system was installed in case of an emergency.
To protect fire engine access from being blocked by private cars, the fire department turned part of a greenbelt into parking lots.
Wu said that through this transformation Xincheng Garden Community could eliminate potential hazards and ensure safety. Such transformations will be carried out in all the old residential communities in Yangzhou in the near future.
