Yao Yuchen, a student from Ningbo's Zhenhai High School, ranked second at the 29th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) after 10 days of fierce competition in Teheran, capital of Iran from July 14 to 23.
IBO is an annual global science competition for secondary school students to test their skills in tackling biological problems and dealing with biological experiments.
Around 270 students from 70 countries and regions took part in this year's edition where they competed with each other in plant anatomy and physiology, animal systematics and anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, and behavior and evolution. Twenty-seven students won gold medals at the event.
The total points racked up by Yao ranked him second among all the participants and first among Chinese contestants.
