Zhang Yao from Inner Mongolia won the final of men’s 10,000 meters race walking at the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland on July 14.
Zhang Yao won the gold medal with a time of 40 minutes 32.06 seconds, marking the first gold medal for Chinese sports delegation.
Born in Wuhai in 2000, Zhang entered the judo and martial arts sports center of Inner Mongolia. Zhang won the 10,000-meter championship in the 2017 Yellow Mountain Race Walking Tournament, and took first place at the 2017 Asian Youth Athletics Championships.
In 2018, he won the 10,000-meter team race walking in the Taicang International Athletics Championships.
