South Park has experienced a century as one of the five parks (East, North, West, South, and Middle) built by Zhang Jian, a famous modern industrialist. The five parks are the first batch of the city's parks and the model of modern urban construction in China. With evergreen and luxuriant vegetation, it is composed of several magnificent waterside buildings in the style of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties such as Qianling Guan, Jiahui Hall and Yuzhong Hall. Liu Shaoqi (1898 -1969), the former president of the People's Republic of China once stayed here during his visit to Nantong in 1950s.
