Formerly known as Xinghuajiao Temple, West Temple was built in the first year of the Qiandao Period of the Song Dynasty (1165) and rebuilt many times in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and the Republic of China. The main hall as a representative of temple buildings in the Ming Dynasty is still well preserved and was listed as a protected cultural relic in Nantong in 1998.
