A group of foreign filmmakers embarked on a journey to explore the city of Ordos, following an opening ceremony to mark the beginning of the Looking China Youth Film Project in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, held on July 1.

On July 2, the young filmmakers braved the rain at Genghis Khan Mausoleum to find the best views to make their films, and learn about the history and culture of Ordos and Inner Mongolia. The intermittent rain didn’t dampen their enthusiasm but did help keep the participants cool in the summer heat.

On the following day, the filmmakers headed to different areas of Ordos to take a closer look at the city and shoot more material for their films. Each filmmaker has a pre-agreed topic for their film.

So what were their first impressions of Ordos?

Zachary John Flint: It is not crowded in Ordos, and it is a beautiful place with loads for tourists to do. In the following days, I hope I can capture some touching stories on camera and make a really good film.

Kelsey Miller Dowling: The city is very modern with clean streets and beautiful architecture. It is not crowded here, and everything has seemed so fresh to me since I got off the plane. As for shooting my film, I have searched for information about Salawusu but still lack a comprehensive understanding of the area. I hope I can record the beauty and ancient culture of the area when I arrive there.

Geoff Poister: Ordos is a special city with a special history and culture. I’ve been to Siberia before to gain an understanding of the nomadic culture there. During my two days traveling around Ordos, I’ve learnt more about life on the prairies. There’s so much to discover in this special place. I hope my students can discover Ordos’ beauty for themselves and tell stories about the environment and natural world.
