The Zhanjiang Opera Carnival, which will take place at the Zhanjiang Movie Theatre starting on June 28, will provide locals with a cultural feast, with seven modern and classic pieces to be presented by three renowned troupes.
Cantonese Opera is a major genre of Chinese opera and originated in Guangdong Province. It is a deeply respected and widely acclaimed art form that involves music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics, and acting.
The carnival is sponsored by the Zhanjiang Municipal Publicity Department and the Zhanjiang Culture, Broadcasting, News and Publishing Agency. Its purpose is to preserve Cantonese Opera culture and enrich the lives of residents.
Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe, a regular at cultural festivals and carnivals, will perform Return the Money, Warrior Lanling, and Legend of the White Snake. Zeng Xiaomin, a National First-Class Actress and winner of the 28th Plum Performance Award, will lead the cast as Bai Suzhen in Legend of the White Snake.
The Zhanjiang Cantonese Opera Troupe plans to wow audiences with The Libertine and Wife in the Morning, Sister-in-Law at Night, while the Zhanjiang Lei Opera Troupe will bring The Pearl Pagoda and The Return of the Prodigal Son to the stage.
To promote cultural activities among residents, the government will subsidize 100 yuan ($15) for each ticket for performances by the two local troupes, and 200 yuan for performances by the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe.
