Zhanjiang Customs cooperated with the Zhanjiang Tobacco Monopoly Bureau to dispose of more than 430,000 cartons of smuggled cigarettes from June 22 to 24.
Valued at over 600 million yuan ($92 million), these Marlboro, ESSE, and Double Happiness cigarettes were burned in the furnaces of Guangdong Yudean Zhanjiang Biomass Power Co Ltd. This process is expected to generate about 142,000 kilowatts of electricity, enough to last 71 urban households for an entire year.
In recent years, Zhanjiang Customs has been cooperating with tobacco, anti-smuggling and police authorities and intensified its crackdown on smuggled cigarettes, with 117 relevant cases being handled since 2017.
