Zhanjiang unveils design for Tiaoshun Cross-Sea Bridge

The design for the Tiaoshun Cross-Sea Bridge in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, which is overseen by He Jingtang, chief designer of the China Pavilion for 2010 Shangha World Expo, has been finalized.

It will feature two bridge towers taking the shape of a doorframe to symbolize a southern gateway into the country and represent the significance of the city's pivotal position along the Belt & Road.

The bridge tower, which adopts a vivid red color scheme, will make the bridge eye-catching against the backdrop of the clear blue sky and the open Zhanjiang Bay.

The top of the configuration will be imprinted with the name of the bridge, "Tiao Shun", two Chinese characters on a traditional Chinese seal, to add a cultural undertone. The phrase was used to depict favourable weather for crops in ancient China.

Costing 2.47 billion yuan ($390 million), construction of the 4,809-meter bridge started on Dec 1, 2017. Its dual six-lane structure is designed for a speed limit of 80 kilometers per hour. 

Upon its completion in 2019, the bridge will serve as a fast route that connects Haidong New District with Chikan and Potou districts, and Suixi county. It will also ease traffic pressure on Haiwan Bridge, currently the only east-west channel in the city.
