​Taiwan seniors granted benefits in Pingtan

Taiwan residents, aged above 65, can now apply for Chinese mainland senior citizen identity cards in Pingtan, East China’s Fujian province, local media reported on Tuesday.

The move, the first of its kind on the mainland, is part of the city’s efforts to echo the central government’s call in furthering communication and cooperation across the Straits.

Earlier this year, the central government issued 31 measures, which stipulate that people from Taiwan will gradually be granted equal status with residents of the Chinese mainland with regards to entrepreneurship, employment, education and other aspects of daily living.

Pingtan, the closest neighbor on the mainland of Taiwan, is spearheading in implementing the preferential policies for Taiwan senior citizens. According to local authorities, one can submit application materials online, and the cards will be delivered to them if they qualify for the card.

 With the senior citizen identity card, Taiwan seniors will be able to enjoy a series of solid benefits on the mainland, including free entry into scenic spots and some medical care privileges.
