A paper-cutting event that drew 626 participants was certified as the world's largest such event by the World Record Certificate agency (WRCA) in Hohhot’s Horinger county, Inner Mongolia autonomous region on May 26.

The participants, who came from different walks of life: paper-cutting craftsmen, hobbyists and traditional inheritors aged 6 to 93, completed their own paper-cutting works within 20 minutes.

In Horinger, paper-cutting enjoys a long history and combines the essences of farming and nomadic culture, reflecting a uniquely Inner Mongolian style that caused it to be entered into the World Intangible Heritage catalog in 2009.

“This event aims to demonstrate the beautiful art of paper-cutting and attract younger generations to discover and promote this cultural treasure,” said Duan Jianjun, a national inheritor of Chinese paper-cutting. Duan also noted that this record-setting attempt was aimed at exploring innovations in the content, form and materials of paper-cutting, updating it to reflect modern life.

The event was but one highlight of Inner Mongolia's Peony Flower Culture and Tourism Festival held from May 26 to June 30.
