Shenzhen hospital gets friendship award from Sri Lanka association

Shenzhen Children's Hospital, one of the largest comprehensive 3A pediatric hospitals in Guangdong province, was granted a special friendship award from the Association for Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation on May 22.

Indrananda Abeysekera, president of the association, paid a personal visit to the Shenzhen hospital and bestowed it with the Sri Lanka-China Friendship Award, as well as a thank-you letter, for the efforts it made to cure a Sri Lankan child, with congenital abnormalities.

The child, identified as Dulen, had two genitals, two colons, and suffered from anal atresia. There are only five similar cases in the world and no successful operation has ever been documented. With help from social charity associations, the unfortunate child was sent to Shenzhen in Nov 2014 for further treatment.

Shenzhen Children's Hospital set up a special team of experts integrating departments of urinary surgery, orthopedics, ultrasound, and radiology and formulated a thorough treatment plan for the boy. In March 2015, the operation was carried out and lasted 14 hours, but was very successful. Dulen recovered soon after and left Shenzhen that July with his parents.

The operation demonstrates Shenzhen Children's Hospital's proficiency in treating rare congenital abnormalities. It also exemplifies the bond between Sri Lanka and the child, said Ren Linhan, deputy director of the public hospital administration of Shenzhen.
