In order to become a national comprehensive test area for new and old kinetic energy conversion, Shandong province in East China is striving to improve industrial structures to achieve high-quality development.
The province considers ten industries to be development trend-setters. They are the industries of new generation of information technology, high-end equipment, new energy and new materials, smart marine, medical care and health, green chemicals, modern high-efficiency agriculture, cultural creativity, tourism and modern finance.
To speed up the conversion of new and old kinetic energy, Shandong plans to accelerate the development of emerging industries, transform traditional industries and make better use of markets.
Innovation drives emerging industries
To promote the development of emerging industries, the province attaches importance to core enterprises the development of which is believed to complete industrial chains.
Therefore, to attract Hewlett Packard – a leading printer manufacturer– to settle down at Weihai, the city introduced five support projects valued at as much as 1.2 billion dollars in advance and signed agreements with a batch of related enterprises to set up a “complete industrial chain” for the newcomer. The settlement of HP has made Weihai a highland of printer production. Its products are sold as far away as Mexico.
Locating along the sea, Shandong province boasts potential marine industry. It tries to strengthen modern marine industries by developing marine technology. The project of “the key technology for trehalose production and application”, which was directed and completed by Professor Wang Ruiming from Qulu University of Technology, won the first prize of for Shandong Provincial Technical Innovation in 2016. Since 2010, the project has been used by several enterprises, such as Shandong Fuyang Biotechnology Co Ltd. As of now, the trehalose yields of enterprises that employ this technology account for more than 60 percent of the national total, greatly reducing reliance on imported trehalose products.
New technology plays an irreplaceable role in the development of emerging industries. Jinan Shengquan Group, after seven years’ trial and error, managed to extract biomass graphene from cornstalks and apply the material to clothing production. Tang Diyuan, chairman of the group, reflected on the company’s efforts in developing new materials and said that “innovation makes Shengquan survive”.
With the rapidly increasing senior population, medical care and the health industry is expected to be a pillar industry worth trillions. The project “Health Shandong 2030” is included in the provincial economic development strategy. Sun Hongjun, head of Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, said that to improve people’s health based on existing medical resources can bring about immeasurable economic and social benefits.
