A heavy-haul train service was launched from Hohhot, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, for service to Tangshan in Hebei province on May 20.
In order to meet demand, 20 pairs of heavy-haul trains are planned to operate each day through Luanping east station, Fengrun west station and Tangshan west station.
Each train will consist of 105 containers. An estimated daily average of 210,360 tons of coal will be hauled from Inner Mongolia to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.
The new service will lower transportation and environmental pressure in the north of China where currently so much coal has to be carried by thousands of heavy trucks.
Since March, infrastructure such as tracks and overhead lines along the Hohhot-Tangshan railway has been upgraded for the operation of the trains.
