The Beijing Aquarium, a State AAAA Scenic Spot, is located on the north bank of the Long River in the Beijing Zoo. Tourists should first travel to the Gaoliangqiao Byway (shortly to be renamed the Qixiang Road), Haidian District. It is a modern marine life museum focusing on popular science education, leisure and entertainment.

The Beijing Aquarium boasts a unique and spectacular blue building shaped like a conch shell. Covering a floor space of about 120,000 square meters, it has a total construction area of 42,000 square meters, and an external 80,000 square meters of garden landscape. The Beijing Aquarium is one of the world's largest inland aquariums. Following the exhibition concept of "Awareness of the Oceans, and Understanding Marine Organisms", its theme display areas are as follows: Wonders of the Rainforest, Touch Pools, Around the Oceans and Shark Harbor, Chinese Sturgeon Hall, Bay of Whales and Dolphins and Oceanic Theatre. Tens of thousands of specimens of over 1,000 marine species are shown in a natural environment established in accordance with respective exhibition themes by modern sound and lighting techniques. Modern painting techniques have also been used to combine real space with virtual scenes. By means of scientific and rational distribution and arrangement, a wonderful dreamlike "Sea World" has been created for all visitors. The Beijing Aquarium is characterized not only by fish displays and aquatic animal performances but also by a wide range of popular science activities which introduce knowledge about marine organisms and tell stories of the sea to us all.
