Liangkou town: ideal place for picking juicy yangmei in Guangzhou

The yangmei, also known as myrica rubra, Chinese bayberry or waxberry, is a sweet, crimson-colored fruit native to East Asia, particularly South China. In Liangkou town of Conghua district, Guangzhou, this juicy fruit has been being grown for over 20 years.

In mid-May, the yangmei begins to ripen in Huanglongdai Yangmei Plantation in Liangkou town, which covers an area of more than 4,000 mu (267 hectares) and is surrounded by creeks. The fruits are grown without the use of farm chemicals and are completely organic.

There are three types of waxberries grown in Huanglongdai, including the black pearl and the red bull, all of which are sweet and juicy. The black pearl is currently in season and yangmei famers are busy harvesting the delicacy.

Visitors who want to pick and taste the seasonal fruits can drive to the Daqing-Guangzhou Expressway, then on to 354 Provincial Road, 105 National Highway and Township Road 557 before finally reaching the plantation.

Apart from picking yangmei, visitors can also attend a yangmei festival which began in Liangkou town on May 12 and will run until June 3. The festival will offer visitors a great opportunity to learn about local yangmei culture while tasting yangmei wines and special yangmei-themed food.
